Is my desire to be a better christian fueled out of a desire to know God more, or is it just that I want to help so many people, go to places and serve them and teach them about God?
I think it's mainly the second one...
Isn't that not so good? Shouldn't I be wanting to be a better christian because I want to get to know God better and stuff as opposed to wanting to be one for other people?
I'm really not sure...

I don't think those are necessarily mutually exclusive. I think that often, God can teach us about Himself through our service to others. I also don't think that you need to be a "better" Christian to help and serve others. God gave you that desire to be a servant to others- you can't not use it because you don't feel "qualified" yet. Remember that story Jesus told about the sheep on the right, representing people who served others, and the goats on the left, people who didn't? I don't remember where it is, exactly, but read it. :)
